Workplace Safety

Safety in the workplace is a key feature of any well run business, large or small. Every business should develop good safety habits as a part of the daily business routine.

Your workplace is required to have an Annual Safety Inspection if your insurance premium is $5,000 or more, or if you are a self-insured business or member of a self-insured group. Download Safety Checklist

The safety inspection may be conducted by:
  • The employer or on-site manager, as self-inspection;
  • A Safety Consultant or Loss Control Specialist representing the insurance carrier;
  • A Professional Independent Safety Consultant;
  • A Safety Consultant from the Workers' Compensation Administration - they perform workplace inspections for small businesses at no charge!

Safety Facts

Industry Safety Analysis

Statistical data regarding accidents and resulting workers' compensation claims are useful for policy development. This information can be an essential tool in accident prevention.

These sections use WCA statistical data by industry, individual Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes, and corresponding numbers of indemnity claims for a specific time period (2001). Individual types of accidents are identified by industry so policy can focus on the details necessary to prevent accidents.

Most sections are in checklist form that allow individual types of accidents per industry to be addressed in a systematic approach to problem solving. We also include ideas and suggestions to help prevent accidents and improve workplaces throughout New Mexico.

We suggest you use this information as an integral part of your safety program, and apply the research in the normal course of business, including: annual safety inspections, near-miss reviews, insurance program assessments, and accident analyses or other reviews.
